Grouse Mountain snowshoeing is so popular for a number of reasons.
The mountain is located within minutes of the city just off the highway and even has public transit access. Because of its proximity, Grouse Mountain snowshoeing is a great after dinner outing. The trails are well marked and vary from an easy stroll to back-country adventures to suit every appetite. This winter, the snowshoe route up to Dam Mountain has been marked as the Snowshoe Grind as an alternate to the Grouse Grind which is only open during the summer months. Snowshoe rentals are available and there’s a wide selection of programs available whether you’re looking for an introduction to snowshoeing or a regular social outing. The programs that run at night are particularly fun and a gentle introduction to snowshoeing in the dark.
The Snowshoe Grind trail is a steep slog that takes you into the backcountry where the trails zigzag off in every direction. Fortunately the trail is very well marked. It would be easy to get turned on the mountain as it seems different every week as the snowpack changes. Despite it’s proximity to the city, don’t assume that it is without risk. The trails run along mountain ridges with treacherous drops and spectacular cliffs with sheer edges. Always exercise caution when using trails.
The views from anywhere on the trails are stunning and it feels like you’re a million miles away. On a weekend the trails can be busy, but if you’re lucky enough to be able to get up there on a week day you’ll likely only cross paths with one or two other snowshoers.
The sunsets are spectacular from the higher elevations on the trail. Be sure to pack a headlamp if you plan on going to watch the sunset.
The snow this year has been unbelievable. The mountain is still open for snowboarding – yes in May. It’s not too late to get out and experience Grouse Mountain snowshoeing this season
Grouse Mountain has loads to offer year round but over the winter months it turns into a winter wonderland. There are 26 runs for downhill skiing and snowboard, a good variety of snowshoeing trails, sleigh rides and even an outdoor skating rink.
